I do use the topper as supplied. I use spectra/dyneema lines for that too.
I thought about using the center line hal as the topper but decided I like
having it used for what it's supposed to be there for.
As far as shackles are concerned, every hal/topper shackle we have on
Mystify is a Tylaska T5 (5,000lb breaking strength). A couple of nice
points about these are that they can be opened under load with a fid (and a
lot of gusto) and nothing tends to get caught on them. I think snap
shackles are just begging to get caught on something and open at the wrong
time (not to mention they typically don't handle high loads without getting
really big in size). I make my own soft shackles out of dyneema (NER
Endura) and use those on the kite sheets. I use the T5's on the guys and
then I really like the low load non swiveling Equiplite shackles for the
jib sheets.
I also highly, highly recommend checking out Yale PhD. racing cordage - so
light - so strong. I use Maffioli Swiftcord for my gross and fine tune on
the main sheet system. For light air sheets I have Marlow Excel Pro (like
5mm) for the really light stuff. For the light stuff on the kite we go to
sheets only as I have the last 4' of my kite sheets stripped and use the
soft shackles so I don't really need to carry a 2nd pair of light sheets.
Not sure what I've left out....
Cheers,
Michael

I do use the topper as supplied. =A0I use spectra/dyneema lines for that to=
o. =A0I thought about using the center line hal as the topper but decided I=
like having it used for what it's supposed to be there for. =A0<div><b=
r></div>
<div>As far as shackles are concerned, every hal/topper shackle we have on =
Mystify is a Tylaska T5 (5,000lb breaking strength). =A0A couple of nice po=
ints about these are that they can be opened under load with a fid (and a l=
ot of gusto) and nothing tends to get caught on them. =A0I think snap shack=
les are just begging to get caught on something and open at the wrong time =
(not to mention they typically don't handle high loads without getting =
really big in size). =A0I make my own soft shackles out of dyneema (NER End=
ura) and use those on the kite sheets. =A0I use the T5's on the guys an=
d then I really like the low load non swiveling Equiplite shackles for the =
jib sheets.</div>
<div><br></div><div>I also highly, highly recommend checking out Yale PhD. =
racing cordage - so light - so strong. =A0I use Maffioli Swiftcord for my g=
ross and fine tune on the main sheet system. =A0For light air sheets I have=
Marlow Excel Pro (like 5mm) for the really light stuff. =A0For the light s=
tuff on the kite we go to sheets only as I have the last 4' of my kite =
sheets stripped and use the soft shackles so I don't really need to car=
ry a 2nd pair of light sheets. =A0Not sure what I've left out....</div>

Thanks Michael,<br>
=3D20<br>
That's a great offer and an excellent outline for a Frers 33 racing =3D=
<br>
package halyard plan.=3D20<br>
=3D20<br>
Do you use the topping lift as originally supplied with the boat? If so, =
=3D<br>
any recommendations for that? We have removed ours and use the =3D<br>
centerline halyard as a topping lift. It can serve as an extra halyard =3D<=
br>
in a pinch if need be. Also, for the headsail halyards we use Tylaska =3D<b=
r>
shackles which can be opened and closed with one hand. The foredeck =3D<br>
appreciates that.<br>

Subject: [frers-list]Re: frers-list digest, Vol 1 #621 - 3 msgs<br>
=3D20<br>
Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. =A0I'm new to the Fr=
ers 33 =3D<br>
but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Store at =
=3D<br>
Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running rigging, =
=3D<br>
splicing, shackles, etc. =A0I'm excited about this conversation!<br>
=3D20<br>
On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed with me =3D<br=
>
will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West M*&=
%$&, =3D<br>
or otherwise.<br>
=3D20<br>
On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations if you're interested =
=3D<br>
in a full set of halyards. =A0For the debate on whether to strip or not to =
=3D<br>
strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes =3D<=
br>
the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. The jib =3D=
<br>
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =3D=
<br>
keep the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for =3D<b=
r>
about 2 feet that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is =3D<b=
r>
up. =A0I then strip "x" amount of cover so that the non covered p=
art of =3D<br>
the hal is in the mast when fully hoisted. =A0Of course, less cover =3D3D =
=3D<br>
less weight and when aloft, can make a big difference.=3D20<br>
=3D20<br>
I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. =A0I will also strip =
=3D<br>
out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's pretty picky an=
d =3D<br>
me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about having expose=
d =3D<br>
core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my halyards and =3D<b=
r>
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =3D<br=
>
spin hals up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct =3D=
<br>
sunlight and will last longer.<br>
=3D20<br>
In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vectran cores for main =
=3D<br>
and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for spin hals. =A0The =
=3D<br>
little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hals. In terms of =3D=
<br>
what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. =A0Samson Warpspeed is=
=3D<br>
great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly whereas Yale =3D<=
br>
holds up longer. =A0Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Maxibraid Plus =
=3D<br>
is the Spectra core offering from them. =A0Of course there are vectran or =
=3D<br>
spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =3D<br>
(think NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all vectran).=3D20<b=
r>
=3D20<br>
Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one morning! =A0My rig is =3D<=
br>
unstepped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone =A0has questions. =A0Yo=
u =3D<br>
can email me at mma@crowleys.comor <a href=3D"mailto:michael@gosailingchica=
go.com">michael@gosailingchicago.com</a>. =A0Here =3D<br>
is a link to what we have online for cordage (we may have more in the =3D<b=
r>
physical store - including different color offerings, etc) =3D<br>
<a href=3D"http://store.crowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-cln-Lines-and-C=

=3D20<br>
=3D20<br>
Of course, I'm happy just to talk/write about this stuff just to help =
=3D<br>
out - not a sales pitch. =A0I just love this stuff.<br>
=3D20<br>
Cheers,<br>

Hi Guys,<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets. =A0=3D=

There<br>
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch =3D=

at<br>
the lowest price. =A0Anyone have any info on what they are using and why. =
=A0=3D<br>
I<br>
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =3D<br=

<p class=3D3DMsoNormal>Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an exp=

&nbsp;I'm new<br>
to the Frers 33 but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the =3D<b=

Ship's<br>
Store at Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running =

<div><br>
<br>
<p class=3D3DMsoNormal>On the fun side, I have some cool recommendati=
ons =3D<br>
if you're<br>
interested in a full set of halyards. &nbsp;For the debate on whether t=
o =3D<br>
strip<br>
or not to strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as =3D=
<br>
it<br>
takes the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. =3D<b=
r>
The jib<br>
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =3D=
<br>
keep<br>
the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for about 2 =
=3D<br>
feet<br>
that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is up. &nbsp;I =
=3D<br>
then strip<br>
&quot;x&quot; amount of cover so that the non covered part of the h=
al is =3D<br>
in the<br>
mast when fully hoisted. &nbsp;Of course, less cover =3D3D less weight =
and =3D<br>
when<br>
aloft, can make a big difference.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p></p>=

<div><br>
<br>
<p class=3D3DMsoNormal>I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals=
, =3D<br>
fyi. &nbsp;I<br>
will also strip out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's=
=3D<br>
pretty<br>
picky and me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about =3D=
<br>
having<br>
exposed core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my =3D<br>
halyards and<br>
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =3D<br=
>
spin hals<br>
up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct sunlight =3D<=
br>
and will<br>
last longer.<o:p></o:p></p><br>

<br>
<p class=3D3DMsoNormal>In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE f=
an of =3D<br>
Vectran<br>
cores for main and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for =3D<b=
r>
spin<br>
hals. &nbsp;The little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin =
=3D<br>
hals. In<br>
terms of what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. &nbsp;Sam=
son<br>
Warpspeed is great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly =3D<=
br>
whereas<br>
Yale holds up longer. &nbsp;Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and =3D=
<br>
Maxibraid<br>
Plus is the Spectra core offering from them. &nbsp;Of course there are =
=3D<br>
vectran<br>
or spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =3D<b=

(think<br>
NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all =3D<br>
