I do use the topper as supplied. I use spectra/dyneema lines for that =
too. I thought about using the center line hal as the topper but =
decided I like having it used for what it's supposed to be there for. =20
=20
As far as shackles are concerned, every hal/topper shackle we have on =
Mystify is a Tylaska T5 (5,000lb breaking strength). A couple of nice =
points about these are that they can be opened under load with a fid =
(and a lot of gusto) and nothing tends to get caught on them. I think =
snap shackles are just begging to get caught on something and open at =
the wrong time (not to mention they typically don't handle high loads =
without getting really big in size). I make my own soft shackles out of =
dyneema (NER Endura) and use those on the kite sheets. I use the T5's =
on the guys and then I really like the low load non swiveling Equiplite =
shackles for the jib sheets.
=20
I also highly, highly recommend checking out Yale PhD. racing cordage - =
so light - so strong. I use Maffioli Swiftcord for my gross and fine =
tune on the main sheet system. For light air sheets I have Marlow Excel =
Pro (like 5mm) for the really light stuff. For the light stuff on the =
kite we go to sheets only as I have the last 4' of my kite sheets =
stripped and use the soft shackles so I don't really need to carry a 2nd =
pair of light sheets. Not sure what I've left out....
=20
Cheers,

Michael
Thanks Michael,
=3D20
That's a great offer and an excellent outline for a Frers 33 racing =3D
package halyard plan.=3D20
=3D20
Do you use the topping lift as originally supplied with the boat? If so, =
=3D
any recommendations for that? We have removed ours and use the =3D
centerline halyard as a topping lift. It can serve as an extra halyard =
=3D
in a pinch if need be. Also, for the headsail halyards we use Tylaska =
=3D
shackles which can be opened and closed with one hand. The foredeck =3D
appreciates that.

=3D20
Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. I'm new to the Frers 33 =
=3D
but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Store at =
=3D
Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running rigging, =3D
splicing, shackles, etc. I'm excited about this conversation!
=3D20
On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed with me =3D
will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West M*&%$&, =
=3D
or otherwise.
=3D20
On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations if you're interested =
=3D
in a full set of halyards. For the debate on whether to strip or not to =
=3D
strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes =
=3D
the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. The jib =
=3D
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =
=3D
keep the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for =
=3D
about 2 feet that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is =
=3D
up. I then strip "x" amount of cover so that the non covered part of =
=3D
the hal is in the mast when fully hoisted. Of course, less cover =3D3D =
=3D
less weight and when aloft, can make a big difference.=3D20
=3D20
I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. I will also strip =
=3D
out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's pretty picky and =
=3D
me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about having exposed =
=3D
core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my halyards and =
=3D
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =3D
spin hals up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct =
=3D
sunlight and will last longer.
=3D20
In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vectran cores for main =
=3D
and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for spin hals. The =
=3D
little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hals. In terms of =
=3D
what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. Samson Warpspeed is =
=3D
great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly whereas Yale =
=3D
holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Maxibraid Plus =
=3D
is the Spectra core offering from them. Of course there are vectran or =
=3D
spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =3D
(think NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all vectran).=3D20
=3D20
Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one morning! My rig is =3D
unstepped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone has questions. You =
=3D
can email me at mma@crowleys.comor michael@gosailingchicago.com. Here =
=3D
is a link to what we have online for cordage (we may have more in the =
=3D
physical store - including different color offerings, etc) =3D
http://store.crowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-cln-Lines-and-Cordage/Ca=
=3D
tegories?RiggingLinesandCordage=3D3D1
=3D20
=3D20
Of course, I'm happy just to talk/write about this stuff just to help =
=3D
out - not a sales pitch. I just love this stuff.

Hi Guys,
Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets. =

There

at
the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are using and why. =

I
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =3D
still
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that =

you

Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. =
=3D
I'm new
to the Frers 33 but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the =
=3D
Ship's
Store at Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running =3D
rigging,
splicing, shackles, etc. I'm excited about this =3D
conversation!

On the business end of things, any orders for =3D
rigging placed
with me will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West
M*&%$&, or otherwise.

On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations =
=3D
if you're
interested in a full set of halyards. For the debate on whether to =
=3D
strip
or not to strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as =
=3D
it
takes the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. =
=3D
The jib
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =
=3D
keep
the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for about 2 =
=3D
feet
that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is up. I =3D
then strip
"x" amount of cover so that the non covered part of the hal is =
=3D
in the
mast when fully hoisted. Of course, less cover =3D3D less weight =
and =3D
when
aloft, can make a big difference.

I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, =
=3D
fyi. I
will also strip out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's =
=3D
pretty
picky and me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about =3D
having
exposed core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my =3D
halyards and
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =3D
spin hals
up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct sunlight =
=3D
and will
last longer.

In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of =
=3D
Vectran
cores for main and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for =
=3D
spin
hals. The little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin =
=3D
hals. In
terms of what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. Samson
Warpspeed is great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly =
=3D
whereas
Yale holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and =3D
Maxibraid
Plus is the Spectra core offering from them. Of course there are =
=3D
vectran
or spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =
=3D
(think
NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all =3D
vectran).

Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one =3D
morning!
My rig is unstepped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone =3D
has

Hi Guys,

Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets.
There
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch =
=3D
at
the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are using and =
=3D
why.
I
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =3D
still
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that =

you
can end for end.
Subject: [frers-list]Re: frers-list digest, Vol 1 #621 - 3 msgs
=3D20
Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. I'm new to the =
Frers 33 =3D
but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Store at =
=3D
Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running rigging, =
=3D
splicing, shackles, etc. I'm excited about this conversation!
=3D20
On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed with me =
=3D
will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West =
M*&%$&,
=3D
or otherwise.
=3D20
On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations if you're interested =
=3D
in a full set of halyards. For the debate on whether to strip or =
not to =3D
strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes =
=3D
the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. The jib =
=3D
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =
=3D
keep the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for =
=3D
about 2 feet that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is =
=3D
up. I then strip "x" amount of cover so that the non =
covered
part of =3D
the hal is in the mast when fully hoisted. Of course, less cover =
=3D3D =3D
less weight and when aloft, can make a big difference.=3D20
=3D20
I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. I will also =
strip =3D
out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's pretty picky and =
=3D
me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about having exposed =
=3D
core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my halyards and =
=3D
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =
=3D
spin hals up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct =
=3D
sunlight and will last longer.
=3D20
In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vectran cores for main =
=3D
and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for spin hals. =
The =3D
little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hals. In terms of =
=3D
what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. Samson Warpspeed =
is =3D
great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly whereas Yale =
=3D
holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Maxibraid =
Plus =3D
is the Spectra core offering from them. Of course there are =
vectran or =3D
spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =
=3D
(think NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all =
vectran).=3D20
=3D20
Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one morning! My rig is =
=3D
unstepped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone has questions.
You =3D
can email me at mma@crowleys.comor <a =
href=3D"mailto:michael@gosailingchicago.com">michael@gosailingchicago.com=
.
Here =3D
is a link to what we have online for cordage (we may have more in the =
=3D
physical store - including different color offerings, etc) =3D
=3D20
Of course, I'm happy just to talk/write about this stuff just to help =
=3D
out - not a sales pitch. I just love this stuff.
Hi Guys,

Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets. =
=3D
There
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch =

at
the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are using and =
why.
=3D
I
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =

still
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that =

On the fun side, I have some cool =
recommendations =3D
if you're
interested in a full set of halyards. For the debate on =
whether to =3D
strip
or not to strip, I go with a mixed bag.
=3D
then strip
"x" amount of cover so that the non covered part of =
the hal
is =3D
in the
mast when fully hoisted. Of course, less cover =3D3D less =
weight and =3D
when
aloft, can make a big =
difference.

<p =
class=3D3DMsoNormal>

I definitely add stopper balls to my spin =
hals, =3D
fyi. I
will also strip out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's =
=3D
pretty
picky and me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about =
=3D
having
exposed core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my =3D
halyards and
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =
=3D
spin hals
up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct sunlight =
=3D
and will
last longer.

In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE =
fan of =3D
Vectran
cores for main and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for =
=3D
spin
hals. The little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for =
spin =3D
hals. In
terms of what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. =
Samson
Warpspeed is great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly =
=3D
whereas
Yale holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and =
=3D
Maxibraid
Plus is the Spectra core offering from them. Of course there =
are =3D
vectran
or spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =
=3D
(think
NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all =3D
vectran).

Hi Guys,

Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets.
There

are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch =
=3D
at

the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are using =
and =3D
why.
I

know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =
=3D
still

believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that =
=3D
you

can end for end.

Regards

Hi Guys,

Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets.
There=3D3D

are a lot of products out there and of course I want the =
lowest =3D
stretch
at=3D3D

the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they =
are =3D
using and
why. I=3D3D

know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core =
but =3D
I
