Hi Brian
This happened on Persistence a number of times. We used to have the 22 mm =
tracks and cars. You can order the end caps here https://ca.binnacle.com/p=
roduct_info.php?products_id=3D9400 These tracks and cars came with the boa=
t but are undersized. Our port side car came off twice in the manner you d=
escribed and stbd once. Two years ago we replaced the entire track and car=
s both sides with the Harken midrange 27 mm track and cars. We no longer =
have this problem.
One point that I learned during all this is that routine maintenance involv=
es rinsing the cars and tracks occasionally as debris tends to gather along=
the track and harms the bearings which can eventually lead to the cars com=
ing off.
The midrange cars are no longer made for the low beam track that was used i=
n manufacture back in 1987. However you may be able to find some if you se=
ar hard enough. My advice is when you find the end caps buy spares and ext=
ra bearings.
An amusing story about this. Persistence was in a 6 day regatta in Baddeck=
, Nova Scotia. On the second last day our bow guy mentioned there were bea=
rings coming out of stbd car at end of the day. Saturday was the 20 mile f=
inale to the regatta. We pushed the extra bearings back in by hand and tap=
ed the car ends in place using a LOT of electric tape. On the Saturday we =
decided we would leave the car in one place and hope it held. There were t=
hree 3mile WW legs, 3 DW 3 mile legs and a short reach to the finish in WW/=
LW course in 15-18 knots TWS. We were having a great race until the stbd =
car came off while rounding on the start of our final WW leg. The guys on =
the bow got the pole down in record time and we tacked to stbd. There was =
a plastic coat anger in the locker about the same diameter as the bearings.=
We cut two 6 inch sections and jammed them between the car and the track =
on both sides in place of bearings and taped the mess up. It held and we o=
nly lost about 3 boat length in the mess and came first in the race. The c=
urators from the Bell museum brought down the trophy wearing white gloves f=
or the presentation and then took it back to the Alexander Graham Bell muse=
um. The port side went the next year in a race and we tried the coat hange=
r trick again but it did not work that time.
The most amusing part of this story is that two of the three times this hap=
pened we came first in the race.
Mike

The end plate on my port side genoa car failed today spilling the bearings =
out all over the deck, thankfully we caught it before going back up on the =
jib as the car simply came off the track in my hand when I shook it a littl=
e.
It appears Harken doesn't make this car anymore, and they have also discont=
inued the 1537 midrange car also used by the J/109's that superseded the on=
es we have. The broken end plate is easily replaceable, but I don't know=
the part number for the car we have (it's slightly different shape than th=
e newer 1537 car) to even try to find a replacement end plate.
Does anyone know the model number of the car we have, or even better the pa=
rt number for replacement the plastic end plates that keep the bearings ins=
ide?
